H-beam CNC Assembly Welding Straightening Machine

How to prepare your workshop for an H beam assembly welding straightening machine?

The 3-in-1 machine (model PHJ0818) combines assembly, gantry SAW welding and flange straightening in one line, so its footprint is roughly 30 m instead of the ~90 m of a traditional three-separate-machine line - but it still needs proper site preparation. Before delivery, plan: (1) a clear run of about 30 m of floor space plus 1-2 m access aisles on both sides for maintenance and flux recovery; (2) an infeed area where steel plates and assembled T-joints can be staged; (3) an overhead crane covering the loading point (workpieces run 4-15 m long); (4) power, compressed air and fume extraction routed to the line before the machine arrives. Doing these before shipment lets installation and commissioning finish in days rather than weeks.

What foundation and floor loading does the machine need?

The line needs a level, vibration-free concrete foundation designed for the machine weight plus the heaviest workpiece. Key requirements: foundation flatness within about 2 mm per meter, anchor bolt holes pre-positioned per the installation drawing, and a floor that resists vibration from nearby hammering or press equipment - shock affects weld quality and the hydraulic straightening unit. After the machine is set, leveling is done with shims under the base to within the manufacturer's tolerance (typically around 0.1 mm/m), anchor bolts torqued, and a secondary grout pour cures before full load. If your existing slab is thin or the soil is soft, have a local engineer confirm the load spread - retrofitting a foundation after delivery is far more expensive than getting it right first.

What power supply and utilities are required?

Standard supply is 380V/50Hz three-phase (confirm the exact voltage for your country at order time - it is built to order). Budget for: the main machine drive and hydraulic power pack, two submerged arc welding power sources (single-arc single-wire standard; the PHJ0818 also supports double-arc double-wire and single-arc double-wire options), fume extraction, and workshop lighting for the full 30 m run. Install a dedicated distribution cabinet with a solid earth - grounding resistance at or below 4 ohms - and keep control/signal cabling separated from welding power cables during installation to avoid interference. Compressed air is needed for pneumatic clamping and cleaning. Because SAW runs hot and long, stable input voltage matters: if your grid fluctuates more than about ±10%, add a stabilizer.

How long does installation and commissioning take?

For a single 3-in-1 line shipped in wooden cases/containers, plan roughly 3-5 working days for mechanical installation, leveling, electrical hookup and hydraulic filling, followed by 1-2 days of trial welds and straightening tests with your own steel sections. The sequence is: crane the machine onto the prepared foundation and level it; anchor and grout; connect power, air and extraction; fill and bleed the hydraulic system; then run first articles across your size range - the machine handles beams from 200-1800 mm high, flanges 200-800 mm wide and 8-25 mm thick, lengths 4-15 m. Confirm the supplier sends an engineer or provides live video commissioning support, and have your electrician and crane available for the whole window so a missing utility does not stretch the schedule.

What operator training is included and how many people do we need?

A major selling point of the 3-in-1 line: a traditional assembly-plus-gantry-welding-plus-straightening layout needs about 5 workers; this line runs with 2 - one at the infeed controlling assembly and clamping, one supervising welding and straightening at the control station. Training typically takes 2-3 days and covers: the parametric HMI (enter web height, flange width/thickness and the machine sets hydraulic alignment automatically), running the welding process (single-arc single-wire standard, with dual-wire options), flux loading and recovery, straightening pressure setup for controllable deformation up to 40 mm section, and daily checks. Ask the supplier to train a backup operator too - lines stop when the only trained person is absent. Keep the welding procedure library the engineers set up during commissioning; it becomes your in-house standard for each beam size.

Do we need an overhead crane, and what lifting capacity?

Yes - an overhead crane (or a well-planned forklift-and-roller alternative) is essential at the infeed. The workpieces are long: 4-15 m beams, and the heaviest configurations with 40 mm controllable-deformation thickness mean flanges plus web can weigh well over a ton per piece. Size the crane for your heaviest realistic beam plus lifting fixture weight; for typical 1800 mm-class production, a 5-10 t crane at the loading area is the common choice. Position the crane so it can lift from your material staging area and place the web and flanges onto the infeed conveyor (6000 mm/min transport) without off-center drops - dropping a beam onto the conveyor rollers is the most common self-inflicted damage during the first weeks. Outfeed also needs trestles or a takeaway conveyor so finished 15 m beams do not bend under their own weight while hot.

What consumables and spare parts should we stock from day one?

Nothing stops production faster than an empty flux hopper. For the first month, stock: submerged arc welding wire in the diameter your procedures call for (typically 3.2-5.0 mm, matched to Q235/Q355 or your local equivalent steels); SAW flux - and keep it dry, baked and stored per the manufacturer's card, because damp flux is the root cause of porosity; contact tips and conductive nozzles for the twin-seam gantry; hydraulic oil (ISO VG46 class) plus spare filters; flux recovery hose and screen spares; and standard fuses, sensors and limit switches recommended on the packing list. Order a recommended spare-parts kit with the machine rather than after the first breakdown - shipping spare parts internationally takes 1-2 weeks, which is a long time for a line that is otherwise producing 40-80 beams per shift.

What should we check during acceptance before signing off?

Acceptance is where problems are cheapest to fix. Run the test with your own steel, not the supplier's samples, and cover the extremes of your product mix: smallest beam (200 mm), largest beam (1800 mm), thinnest web (6 mm) and thickest flange combination. Check: (1) assembly - the hydraulic centering produces a square, centered T-joint without manual correction; (2) welding - both fillet seams are continuous, evenly penetrated, free of porosity and undercut, with bead profile consistent along the full length; (3) straightening - flange flatness meets your standard after the straightening unit, with no permanent flange edge damage; (4) throughput - record the actual cycle time per beam against the 150-1500 mm/min welding speed range to verify it meets contract output; (5) safety - emergency stops, extraction, and interlocks all function. Get any deviation fixed or credited in writing before final payment, and keep a copy of the as-commissioned parameter tables.
