H Beam Gantry Welding Machine

What current and voltage should I set for different H beam plate thicknesses?

For common structural H beams, SAW fillet welding parameters scale with flange thickness. Practical starting points used across the industry: light sections (flange 5-6 mm) around 360-420 A at 28-30 V; 10-12 mm plates around 450-550 A at 30-32 V; 16 mm flanges around 550-650 A at 32-36 V; heavy sections run 600-1000 A at 34-40 V. A useful rule of thumb: for every extra 50 A, raise voltage about 1-1.5 V to keep the bead width-to-depth ratio healthy. Use DC reverse polarity (DCEP) for deeper penetration on the downhand fillets the YM-MH gantry is designed for. Always validate the final numbers on a test weld of your actual material - these are starting points, not a substitute for a qualified WPS.

What welding speed should I use on the gantry welding machine?

Typical production welding speed for H beam fillet welds is 300-1,000 mm/min depending on required weld leg size, wire diameter and amperage. Real examples from workshops running H beam SAW lines: 5 mm web / 6 mm flange sections weld at about 680-750 mm/min; heavier 10 mm flange / 8 mm web beams around 570 mm/min. The YM-MH trolley speed is inverter controlled with digital display, so setpoints are repeatable. Speed is the quality lever: too fast risks lack of fusion and an undersized leg; too slow wastes time and produces excessive reinforcement. Set the speed to achieve the specified throat thickness in the fewest passes, and confirm with a fillet gauge on the first beam of each batch.

Which welding wire and flux combination should I choose?

Match consumables to the steel grade. For mild steel (Q235, ASTM A36): H08A or H08MnA wire with HJ431 (acidic) flux is the classic pairing. For higher strength steel (Q355 and similar): H10Mn2 or H08MnMoA wire with SJ101 basic flux for better crack resistance. The machine accepts 3.2-5.0 mm wire, with 4.0 mm the workhorse for H beam fillets. Flux discipline matters as much as the grade: bake acidic flux at 150-250 °C for 1 h and basic flux at 300-350 °C for 2 h before use, keep the flux layer 25-35 mm deep so the arc stays fully submerged, and keep recovered flux clean - the gantry's automatic feed and recovery system returns unused flux, but sift out slag fines before reuse or you will import porosity into the next weld.

What fillet weld size can the gantry weld in a single pass?

With 4.0 mm wire at 500-650 A, a single SAW pass reliably deposits 6-12 mm fillet legs, which covers the majority of standard building H beams. Larger specified legs are built up in 2-3 passes on heavy flanges (16 mm and above), cleaning slag between passes and watching interpass temperature. The YM-MH welds both fillets on one side of the web simultaneously with two heads, so a full beam needs two gantry passes (one per side) for single-pass legs, or repeated runs for multi-pass heavy sections. Do not chase a large leg size with excessive current in one pass - that pushes heat input up and increases flange corner distortion; two moderate passes beat one hot pass for distortion control.

Do both sides of the beam weld at the same time, and how does that help?

Yes - the gantry carries two welding heads, one on each side of the web, depositing both fillets simultaneously in the downhand position. Welding both sides in the same pass balances the heat input across the web, which is the simplest and most effective defense against camber and flange corner distortion - a beam welded one side at a time bows toward the hot side and needs extra straightening afterward. The trolley also welds bidirectionally: it deposits weld moving forward, then welds again moving back without returning empty, roughly eliminating return travel and nearly doubling useful arc-on time on long beams. Combined, twin-head symmetric welding plus bidirectional travel is why a gantry line sustains 40-80 twelve-meter beams per shift where a single-torch setup struggles.

Which welding power sources work with the YM-MH gantry?

The machine integrates with industry-standard SAW power sources rather than locking you to one brand - common matches include Lincoln DC-1000 class and Chinese MZ-1000 series supplies, matched to your WPS and local service support. Set the power source to constant-current mode for continuous SAW fillet welding, and remember the gantry itself draws only about 12.7 kW - the welding power sources are sized separately, so budget your shop supply for the full welding load (roughly 40-60 kVA for twin-head welding). Wire reels from 50 kg up to 250 kg fit the wire support, reducing changeovers on long production runs. Confirm the power source interface (contactor and speed signals) with YOMI at order time so commissioning is plug-and-play.

How does the mechanical seam tracking affect my parameter settings?

The YM-MH uses a three-axis mechanical tracking arc-guide with left-right floating rotation to keep the torch centered on the fillet as the beam twists or the seam shifts. This matters for parameters because tracking keeps the arc length - and therefore the actual current and voltage - stable along the full beam. Without it, a drifting torch changes arc length, which changes current, which changes penetration and leg size mid-seam even though your panel settings never moved. Practically: verify the tracking rollers and guide contact surfaces are clean during daily checks, and treat any sudden parameter drift along a weld as a tracking or fit-up issue first, not an electrical one. With tracking healthy, the parameters you set at the start of the beam are the parameters you get at the end.

Should I write a WPS for the gantry welding machine, and what should it cover?

Yes - even though the machine is automatic, welding is still governed by a qualified welding procedure specification under AWS D1.1, EN ISO 3834 or GB 50205 depending on your market. Your WPS for gantry SAW fillets should fix: steel grade and consumable pairing (wire grade, flux type and baking), wire diameter, current, voltage, travel speed, contact-tip-to-work distance, flux layer depth, single versus multi-pass and pass sequence, and the specified fillet leg size with tolerance. Record the validated settings as a parameter table per web/flange thickness combination and keep it at the machine - operators change specification by recipe, not by experiment. Verify each new combination with a first-article weld: fillet gauge for leg size, visual for undercut and spatter, and macro-etch or UT sampling per your QC plan. Well-run shops also log actual parameters per beam for traceability on contract work.
