Intelligent Automatic Spraying&Painting Machine for Steel structure factory

What is an intelligent automatic spraying and painting machine for steel structures?

It is a closed, conveyor-based coating line that replaces manual air spraying of H-beams, box sections and bridge members. The workpiece enters on a roller or floor-chain conveyor, a 3D scanning system measures its real profile, the controller generates the spray path and gun triggering automatically, and 12 spray guns (6 above + 6 below) coat the member in one pass. Painting speed is adjustable from 0.6 to 3 m/min, sections up to 3000 mm wide and 700 mm high can pass through (model YM-PT-3070), conveyor load is 800 kg/m, and the integrated drying room uses natural gas or propane so parts can be lifted straight after surface drying. Total installed power is 90.75 kW and the spray package uses Graco (USA) painting units.

How many tonnes of steel can an automatic painting line coat per shift?

Capacity follows conveyor speed and member size, not gun count. At 1.5 m/min with roughly 70% of the conveyor occupied by workpieces averaging 0.35-0.45 t per metre of conveyor length, an 8-hour shift with about 75% uptime passes around 500 m of travel, which is typically 40-70 t of coated steel per shift for a 700 x 3000 mm section range. Running at the maximum 3 m/min roughly doubles that figure as long as drying room length and crane handling keep up. Two rules of thumb matter more than the brochure number: the drying room, not the spray booth, is usually the bottleneck, and the crane or transfer point in front of the line limits real throughput on long 12 m members.

Do H-beams have to be turned over or flipped after the first side is painted?

No. The upper 6 and lower 6 guns are arranged in an outer ring pattern so the top face of the flanges, the underside of the top flange, both web faces and the outer faces of the bottom flange are all coated in a single pass. This eliminates the flip station that manual shops need, and it removes the two biggest quality risks of flipping: handling damage to freshly painted surfaces and a visible shade or thickness step on the second side. It also cuts labour - one operator monitors the line from the control room instead of two painters working inside the booth with respirators. The secondary benefit is schedule: because no member waits for a second pass, work in progress on the shop floor drops sharply.

Can one line spray both water-based and solvent-based paint?

Yes, the machine accepts both water-based and oil-based (solvent) coatings, but the drying recipe must be switched, not just the paint drum. Water-based paints dry by water evaporation and are far more sensitive to humidity and air temperature, so they need longer flash-off and a gentler temperature ramp; solvent paints flash off quickly but release far more VOC and usually need stricter exhaust and abatement. When you change chemistry, update three things: drying room temperature and dwell time, gun atomisation pressure and fluid flow (water-borne paints shear-thinner differently), and the filter/abatement setting. Keep a saved recipe per paint type in the HMI so a changeover is a few minutes rather than a trial-and-error afternoon.

How does 3D workpiece scanning generate the spray program?

Before the spray booth, a scanning station profiles the member in three dimensions - flange width and thickness, web height, member length, plus attachments such as stiffeners, end plates and shear studs. The controller converts that profile into a spray program: which guns open, at what angle, at what traverse speed, and how many passes per surface. Because the program is derived from the actual part rather than a fixed recipe, paint is only applied where steel exists, which is where the material saving comes from - typically a large share of the overspray that manual spraying loses past the edges of the member. It also means mixed production runs can be sequenced back to back without reprogramming: an H-beam, a box column and a plate girder all get their own path automatically.

How is coating film thickness controlled, and what causes sagging or orange peel?

Film thickness is set in the recipe - fluid flow per gun, number of passes and traverse speed - and monitored as the member leaves the booth, so dry film thickness targets such as 60-80 um for a zinc-rich primer or 100-150 um for a build coat are repeatable pass to pass. Sagging is almost always too much wet film in one pass, thinner than specified, or a gun held too close on a vertical web face; the fix is to split the target into two thinner passes rather than one heavy coat. Orange peel comes from atomisation that is too coarse - low air pressure, worn nozzle or fluid too cold - or from spraying over a surface that was not correctly prepared. Both are recipe and consumable issues, which is why nozzle wear records matter more than operator skill on an automatic line.

What overspray, dust and VOC control is needed to pass an environmental inspection?

The line is built as a completely closed workplace with a reserved VOC treatment interface, and measured waste dust emission is below 2 mg/min. That covers particulate capture inside the booth; the VOC side still has to be designed for your local permit. In practice plan for three stages: dry-type overspray filtration to catch paint mist, an exhaust fan sized for the booth cross-section, and ducting to the abatement unit your authority accepts - activated carbon adsorption for moderate solvent loads, or thermal/catalytic oxidation for high-volume solvent use. Two things catch buyers out: permitting is usually slower than equipment delivery, so start the air permit in parallel with the order; and workers must be kept out of the booth, which this layout already achieves by design.

What floor space, power and gas supply does the line need?

Model YM-PT-3070 needs 90.75 kW of installed power, a conveyor rated 800 kg/m, and a drying heat source of natural gas or propane - so confirm the gas supply and flue route before the foundation is poured. Layout is a tunnel: infeed conveyor, scanning station, spray booth, flash-off and drying room, outfeed. As a planning figure, allow roughly 50-70 m of length and 9-12 m of width depending on conveyor length, drying room length and whether you add a cool-down zone, plus clear crane access at both ends and at least 2-3 m of maintenance space on the gun side. The floor must be level and drained, and the booth area should be treated as a hazardous zone for electrical classification.
